Kind to Me
Teaching children the importance of being kind to themselves, Danielle Sellick’s new children’s book, “Kind to Me” (published by Balboa Press AU), draws on schema therapy and emotion regulation strategies including mindfulness to provide children and their parents with helpful thinking styles and a way of sitting with and working through difficult emotions.
The book tells the story of Zac, a 7-year-old, who is learning to be kind to himself: body, heart and mind. Zac uses mindfulness and practices compassionate thoughts, helping him to develop healthy core beliefs about himself. These include “I am OK as I am”, “I can learn from this” and “I am connected to others.”
Along the way Mum and Dad provide nurturing, guidance and containment. This helps Zac to regulate his emotions. Zac also speaks to his parents in the book to express his emotional needs. The author includes notes for parents on teaching and role-modelling self-compassion, as well as how to build emotional resilience in their children.
“Self-compassion is a skill we need to teach our children from a young age to build their emotional resilience and to actually maximize their emotional health throughout their lives. As a result, we see an increase in happiness, self-confidence and motivation, as well as better relationships among those who practice self-compassion.” Sellick says. “Parenting also requires a great deal of self-compassion. Children and parents can learn this together as they read this book.”
Sellick plans to donate half of all profits raised from the book to Australian children’s charity, Friends of Mithra. Mithra is a rehabilitation center in Chennai, India, helping children and young adults with disabilities to thrive.
